Travel Guide: Philly In A Day

When you move to the East Coast in the Winter, the Summer weather makes it compelling to explore everything that is new and bright and unfamiliar. So you pack your bags for a road trip to Philly, a mere 2 hour drive from New York City. It has become a pleasant surprise to discover that travelling to states that touch the corners of New York are an easy drive away, especially after growing up in Texas where it can take up to 9 1/2 hours just to reach the border of Texas from Austin. Every new thing is a comparison to the city experiences that taught you what you know; New York, Austin, Chicago, San Francisco.

When you arrive at Le Meridien, the light coming into the windows behind the concierge desk wink at you from the shiny floors, and the sound of your low heeled shoes echoing welcomes you.

The light in the room illuminates behind the curtains, and it's a nice place to kick off your shoes.

The clean streets of Philly and the architecture of its City Hall remind you of walking along Michigan Ave., but Philly is a place of its own, too. Full of history and color and friendly greetings.

The real event of the evening is perhaps the most emphasizing life landmark- the 40th anniversary show of Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers

When San Francisco was still a place you lived in, his music was the soundtrack to the city, the barefoot walks to Ocean Beach, the late evenings filled with fog. When Petty beings to sing Wildflowers, it sounds just like it always has, the words floating right into your ear and trembling beneath your feet.

Run away, find you a lover
Go away somewhere all bright and new
I have seen no other
Who compares with you
— Wildflowers by Tom Petty

As he sings, the words ring with truth and memory of old days in California hoping for something you couldn't quite put your finger on. It's only when the song ends with the echo of a guitar do you realize what it was all along: an unplanned life on the East Coast, a sense of adventure, and someone who loves you so much he surprised you with the most extraordinary gift; a future of beautiful, musical things.
